. . . movies movies movies movies movies movies movies . . . fuck it man!

On the old firestarter forums there was a movies thread.
Mulholland Drive and Taxi Driver were both recommendations and were great so clearly you guys have decent tastes.
I'd love to compile a "POWERFUL MOVIES" list sometime.

Here are the ones I deem worthy enough to keep on my hardrive:
  • Blade Runner
  • Napoleon Dynamite
  • No Country for Old Men
  • Taxi Driver
  • LoTR (WARNING BUGMAN DETECTED)
  • Watchmen
  • Zardoz

Some other noteworthy movies I liked:
  • Akira
  • Perfect Blue
  • The Thing
  • Marvel's The Avengers  ;D ;D ;D ::)

How about you boys?

I only have one recommendation for now, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. It's hard to think of ones you might not hear about elsewhere, and I'll only recommend ones that are 100% good times. I'll try think of others.

Been meaning to get around to watching Solaris, Andrei Rublev and Tarkovsky's other films. Haven't had the mental energy to really take on something heavy like that lately though.

Shawshank redemption should be seen by everyone. Used to go to the movies all the time, have a couple of theatres that show limited releases. The main one got turned into a premium theatre with easy chairs and shit, and got combined with the regular theatre so screens shit hollywood movies next to Gaspar Noe type movies, and it costs 15 dollars for a ticket instead of 10.

Saw american animals in theatres last summer was cool.

This is your "make it or break it" moment, Velvet.
We're in this together now, there's no turning back.

akira is probably my favorite movie of all time, such a spectacle and masterpiece of a movie. Even if the story is a bit confusing the first time you watch it (unless you watch in japanese, everything is explained better). It's obviously peak hand-drawn animation, amazing music, extremely cool themes/styles/imagery. Perfect blue is definitely my second favorite anime film, it feels the most grounded in reality, while also using animation to distort reality. Really puts black swan to shame imo, once you find out that Darren Aronofsky bought the rights to the movie in america so he could basically rip scenes for requiem for a dream and the premise of black swan. I would always rec almost anything david lynch made, obviously stanley kubrick as well. The fly and the thing, and alien (fuck aliens) are the best sci-fi horrors I can think of right now. The witch is a really well made horror film, but I'm struggling to think of more right now because I got da flu :'(

@DinoBaglioni the opening sequence with the bike chase alone is when of the best pieces of animation I've ever seen. The city skyline, the way the lights trail behind the bikes like Tron as the race through the streets. I swear you could freeze that movie on any frame and you would have a work of visual art. In that respect I don't think any anime has topped it since then.
